Meet Susanne Marie Peña
I come from a family with an unwavering commitment to serve our country and our community. My mother was a nurse and my father, a lieutenant colonel in the Army. I began my career as an educator over 20 years ago as a volunteer, eventually working my way up the ranks from teacher to district administrator. My experiences in OCPS Title 1 schools K-12, as an expert in ELL and ESE programs, and as a post-secondary educator make me the only candidate for Orange County School Board with a diversified perspective regarding the issues affecting our students and families.
STRENGTHENING COLLABORATION AND COMMUNICATION
As a School Board member, Susanne will strengthen collaboration and communication by increasing engagement and involvement of parents, students, teachers, and support staff, creating a school community that makes educationally sound decisions, where every family, regardless of their cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic background has a voice.
ENSURING A SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL
Susanne believes that ALL students, teachers and school staff should be guaranteed a safe environment where the provision of high-quality education is possible. She will advocate for increased safety measures and easy access to mental wellness support for student and staff by qualified and culturally competent mental healthcare professionals.
COMBATING POST-PANDEMIC CHALLENGES
As an education expert, Susanne has experienced first-hand how the pandemic amplified the challenges OCPS faced prior to COVID-19 such as the issues of standardized testing, limited resources for students (especially ESE and ELL) and staff, and of our diverse student body. She will advocate for initiatives to close the achievement gap.
